Karndean Flooring – Advice & FAQ
Some of the more common questions we receive from people considering a Karndean Designfloor for their home
What’s Karndean made of?
Karndean is a vinyl flooring product made primarily from calcium carbonate (limestone), polyvinyl chloride and pigments.
It’s structured with five layers – two PVC backing layers, one high definition photographic layer, one clear PVC embossed wear layer and a top polyurethane (PU) protective coating.
Will a Karndean floor be slippery?
As with most smooth floor coverings, water and other liquids can make it slippery. Karndean floors are designed to be slip resistant, but it’s always best to clean up any spillages straight away, and keep the floor dry.
What’s the difference between the different ranges of Karndean?
Aside from each one having different patterns and inspirations behind the design, from a practical viewpoint the main difference is the wear layer.
Some of the Karndean ranges have wear layers that are much thicker than others; if you’re in need of a particularly durable floor we would advise aiming to purchase one at the thicker end of the scale.
This is why the different ranges hold different time-frames for their guarantees – starting with the Knight tile, which has a 12 year residential guarantee and a 0.3mm surface layer, through to Art Select, the stylish and natural design range which carries a 20 year guarantee.
Can Karndean be used…
In a conservatory?
Over underfloor heating?
Yes – but don’t forget to mention this to Fludes Carpets when placing an order, ideally with the make and model of the heating system. This allows us to check its compatibility with the flooring.
On walls and ceilings?
Yes! The front of each step will however need to be finished off with stair nosings, which Fludes Carpets can give you advice on.
In a wetroom?
Yes – with proper precautions. Advise Fludes Carpets if this is what you’re planning so we can best advise how to proceed.
Next to an Aga or Rayburn stove, or near an open fire?
Yes, but so long as the Karndean floor doesn’t come into direct contact with the hot surfaces themselves, as it can burn the vinyl.
What’s the difference between the various design strips and borders?
The design strips are normally used to help give the appearance of grouting to Karndean flooring.
Metallic strip – for standard borders and features. Available in widths of 3,5, 10, 30 and 76mm.
Feature strip – usually used on tile floors to give the effect of grout lines. Available in six colours. Available in 5mm width.
Design strip – cut from another piece of wood or tile. Available in widths of 3, 5, 10, 30, and 76mm.
There are also three varieties of borders that can be added:
Decorative borders – patterned borders that give a real extra flourish to your Karndean floor.
Keyline border – a single strip border to add to the edge of your floor.
Tramline border – similar to the keyline border, but using two lines instead of one.
Can I fit Karndean myself?
No. When purchasing with Fludes we will fit your Karndean Designflooring for you. As it’s not a DIY product, we strongly advise that you do not fit the floor yourself.
Please note, it is important that your Karndean flooring is professionally installed in order to maintain your guarantee.
Why does my sample look slightly different from the images on the website?
Karndean products are inspired by things seen in the natural world and just as variation in colour and detail is part of the beauty of nature, it’s also a feature of some of their designs. This means that with some of our products you’ll see natural variation when your floor is laid. Karndean are careful to capture images that are as accurate as possible, but as each floor is unique it cannot be guaranteed to be a perfect representation of our products.
For this reason we strongly recommend that you visit your nearest Fludes Carpets stores to see the flooring first-hand.
Moreover, we definitely recommend speaking to one of Fludes Carpets’ flooring specialists rather than buying Karndean flooring over the internet.
How should I protect my Karndean Designflooring against furniture?
By putting felt pads under the feet of your furniture, you can avoid table and chair legs scratching your Karndean floor.
How easy is it to clean and maintain Karndean Designflooring?
After fitting, leave it at least 24 hours to clean your Karndean floor to let it settle in.
Karndean is hardwearing and like any hard flooring, regular maintenance will enhance its beauty and durability.
Karndean have developed an enhanced PU protective surface treatment which has been incorporated into the floors and offers outstanding slip, scuff and soiling resistance, resulting in an easier and more environmentally friendly regime for the cleaning and maintenance of your floor.
However, some cleaning products contain agents that can damage the floor. To qualify for the product guarantee, it’s recommended that you use Karndean Clean cleaning products. Don’t worry, we sell them in all our stores!
And a final note on steam mops – if you’re planning on using one on your Karndean floor, double check the manufacturer guidelines to ensure that they’re suitable.
