About Persian Rugs
Persian rugs are those that are made in the region of the former Persian Empire – now Iran.
The Persian rug industry is approximately 2500 years old, with the traditions and techniques to make them having been passed down through the generations. Carpet and rug weaving remains the most widespread craft in the region.
The rugs are known for their pictorial (rather than geometric) motifs. These can be amazingly elaborate, and look more like fine embroidery than tufting.
Some examples from our showroom in Eastbourne are in the gallery below:
Generally, the more knots per square inch in a Persian rug, the more intricate the pattern and the finer it is. All-silk Persian rugs, for example, can have knots numbering in the thousands per square inch.
As a result, it can sometimes take months – even years – for a piece to be completed.
Many palaces, mansions and stately homes worldwide will have them as a mark of sophistication.
Due to their rich history and incredible craftsmanship, Persian rugs are highly sought after in households throughout the world.
